Master Bedroom Update: Painted Nightstands

As we prepare for "Blizzard-like conditions" tomorrow, I made some progress to updating our Master Bedroom.

The following nightstands were hand-me-downs from my aunt, Bonnie. And unfortunately were fighting against our new, rustic headboard. So they were in for a facelift.

The jury is still out if I made the best color decision, but I went with CeCe Caldwell's Siera Mist Grey. Wondering if I should have gone with the Santa Fe Turquoise to tie in our French dresser, but we'll see.

Because I used CeCe Caldwell Paints, I was able to do this project inside our home without fear of "death by fumes" or a "tornado-like mess." I simply laid trash bags down in our entry way and went at it. The distressing part was painless because it's done with an old t-shirt and water.

Here's the finished product!

What do you think about the nightstand color choice? As you can see, I'm using one of my colorful paintings to help bring in some color to tie in the dresser.

I'm contemplating painting the lamps either turquoise or gold. Turquoise to tie in the french dresser or gold to add some "glam".

Master Bedroom Update: DIY Rustic Headboard

Houston Oklahoma City, we have a headboard!

And I couldn't be more excited about it. Our new headboard is the first (and biggest) step to transforming our Master Bedroom. Although, the headboard might be the biggest transition step, it might be the most budget friendly. Our DIY Rustic Headboard cost us less than $90.00.

Supplies List:
7 1x8 Oak boards
3 1x2 Oak boards
1 can Stain (we chose Minwax Special Walnut)
1 can Polyurethane (Satin Finish)
Sander
Chain and other "Rusti-fy-ing" tools
Paint Brushes
Wood Screws
Level

The boards spent the night inside our house Friday night. B was worried with the forecasted snow storm, the boards might warp in the cold, cold garage. Saturday morning, B kicked off the project with some sanding. Then cutting the boards down to 7 feet.

After sanding and cutting to desired length, B got to take out some aggression and beat the boards. He chose miscellaneous objects from his tool box. By the picture, looks like the chain was his favorite.

Stain progress. I just love how the Special Walnut grabbed the grain and knots and varied with each board. B & I stood and starred at the different stains in Lowe's trying to decide - but am happy with what we picked.

Busted. We were sneaky to get the headboard at the right height with less wood. It ended up being 58" tall, the perfect height.

My handyman in progress. It was his idea for the 3 support beams, that's why I keep the engineer brain around. The support beams were cut to be 2" below the top of the headboard and placed on the wall where the studs were. From there he started placing the beams with a little help from me.

BOOM! Headboard is all in tact and drying after going back through to stain the screw holes.
Once again, here she is! The headboard totally made the room and added some masculinity to counter the girly, white bedding. Don't remember what it looked like before without a headboard? Just look back at the last post

I'm obviously beginning to want to talk about our Master. Next steps? I'm planning to up-cycle our nightstands and the bedside lamps. We want a rug and more throw pillows, but those will come in time.

Let's talk about the room I don't want to talk about (Yet)

Our master bedroom.

3 years later, I still don't have it figured out. But the good news is, we now have to make a point to figure it out because we just upgraded to a KING!

We currently have the bare essentials for bedding (and the room for that matter) but here's what we've got to work with.

Duvet Cover Set: Pinched Pleat at Target. Bed Skirt: Threshold Gray Target. Euros TBD
Hand-me-down Nightstands from my Aunt: possibly paint? Lamps: TJ Maxx (Shades TBR (to be recovered)).
French Dresser: Painted with CeCe Caldwell Paints. Chest of Drawers: Brandon's Great Grandmother's

What are we wishing for in a bedroom? The perfect mixture of girly and manly with a dash of rustic, color and relaxed feel - my Bedroom board on Pinterest can better explain.

PB&J Stories Master Bedroom Redo Reveal

The PB&J stories post is probably my go-to inspiration for Bedroom project. I fell in love with the "girly" pintucked bedding and the "manly' rustic headboard. Even though, yellow is not our thing - we definitely plan to pull some color in the room (obviously with a turquoise dresser) with a rug and throw pillows, etc.

Source Unknown but Pinned it anyways..

B likes rustic and dark decor so incorporating that into my love of color and whimsy can be difficult, but I didn't hesitate one bit when we came across the rustic headboard ideas. And luckily, B is pretty handy so am excited for him to tackle our headboard in the next couple weeks!

As far as all of the other details on my wish list besides paint, a rug, updated night stands... are some adorable, personalized throw pillows. These Custom State Pillows by Marekalaine would be perfect. A Texas pillow for me and Oklahoma for B, please!
